Santa Barbara Island-November 30, 2013-Truth
I was really looking forward to this trip because I had set-up 6 charters aboard the Truth while it would be in Long Beach till the end of April and this was the first one. CIDA had a half charter for this trip out to SBI and the other half was an open boat.
The weather had been excellent and as we all know SoCal REALLY needs the rain but without it and no storms we just keep having awesome diving conditions and this trip wasn’t any different. The ride out to SBI was flat and calm so most everyone had a good sleep out and was rested up for the 1st dive. Because it was still early lobster season we wanted to try and stay out of the Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) and we did diving mostly around the southwestern end. This area has some great dives with depths mainly running between 50’-80’.
There are some deeper dives like Black Cavern which we didn’t do and some other outer reefs but generally Captain Thomas stayed between 50’-70’ for the first 3 dives and then we headed over towards the seal rookery for our last dive. The visibility was excellent running about 50’-60’ and the water temperature was in the low 60’s which made for a very comfortable dive.
One thing I really like about SBI is its ability to please everyone. With all the beautiful reefs with lush kelp, variety of marine life and the sea lion rookery there is something for everyone! I myself was taking pictures this trip along with some others but plan to lobster dive the next trip out aboard the Truth on February 15, 2014. The Truth along with Captain Thomas and crew didn’t disappoint anyone and they even did a Tri-Tip BBQ on the way back to the dock.
Just in case you didn’t hear-the Truth will now be at the Pierpont Landing just behind the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific till the end of April. They have lots of cool trips on their calendar while down in SoCal so I urge you to give them a try or just check the CIDA schedule and sign-up for one of the other 5 trips we have scheduled on the Truth.
