Big Sur-June 2015
Big Sur is one of those hard to dive areas and if you have ever drove down along the Big Sur coast you would know exactly what I am talking about. Steep cliffs, mountain goat trails to the beach and basically very little access so what all that does is make an entire coastline that has seen very few divers in comparison to most of the California coast. The simple part of all this is that for about 3 weeks every year in June the Vision out of Santa Barbara is moved up to Morro Bay where Truth Aquatics runs 1, 2, 3 & 4 day trips along the Big Sur coast.
If you have ever been along Hwy 1 through Big Sur I can tell you that seeing the coast and diving it by boat is way more AWESOME then driving it in a car and wishing you could dive all those cool looking places but sometimes you do have things to contend with like large rolling swells, cold water and sometimes not the best visibility. You just never know how the weather will be and putting all that aside I would go back over and over given the chance. I was on the same trip last year and can tell you that the weather on this trip was way better. For Big Sur we had relatively calm seas, beautiful topside weather and underwater the conditions were fantastic! Water temps were in the low 50’s, not much current and 25′-45′ feet of visibility.
Some of the dives we did were ones we did last year and some were not including one close to McWay Falls which I will call Arch Rock that we did for the first time and that is one I would love to go back to. We did dives at Little Tide Rock, Receding Reef, Harlan Rock, Lopez Pt., Pfeiffer 5, Proposal Pt, Arch Rock Slate Rock, Deep Plaskett Rock, Jade Cove and Whale Boat Rock. All good dives-some better for photo, hunting fish or both and even collecting Jade at Jade Cove.
We had a good group of divers from the Santa Cruz area, our CIDA group and a few others out for a cool adventure. As always Captain Graham and his crew did an excellent job keeping everyone happy and having fun and our 2 cooks kept us well feed. During the trip we even had a few whale & dolphin sightings. If you never have been on one of these trips you must give it a try and when you do you will see why they are getting so popular with some coming back year after year. One thing for sure is CIDA will be back in 2016. Thank you Truth Aquatics!!!
