Santa Cruz-Truth-July 1-2, 2017
By Ken Kollwitz
On July 1st & 2nd CIDA chartered the Truth Dive boat for a two-day trip to the outer Islands over the July 4th holiday weekend. The weekend went great except Mother Nature had other plans for us keeping us again at Santa Cruz Island for the weekend. We started at the southeast end of the island working our way to the west and around the backside of
the island. We did have one REALLY cool stop along the way Saturday morning and that was to Painted Cave. Painted Cave is the second largest sea cave in the world and Captain Davey and second Captain Ely took us in to Painted Cave further then I can ever remember.
Our Adventurous group did 9 dives over the two-day period. Dive sites included Ruby Rock, Emerald Cove, Palm Park, East of 5 Stone Grotto, Pink Ribbon, Fence Line and Flame Reef. Conditions were improving with visibility ranging from 15’-30’; calm with some surge and water temperatures ranging from the high 50’s to low 60’s. There was lots of macro life and the typical fish activity to be seen by all. Thank you to the excellent crew of the Truth Dive Boat for taking good care of us while on the trip. I think it is safe to say everyone had a great two-day trip topside and below the surface with new and old friends.
