30th Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup
This year Channel Islands Dive Adventures was a sponsor for the Avalon underwater cleanup for donating 5 CIDA dive trips and it would also be my 1st time at the cleanup so I was very much looking forward to it.
All week the weather report was not looking very good, but knowing how the reports are (only a forecast which can be wrong) and where Avalon is located I felt the weather would not be as bad as was expected, but I did expect it to be cold. My wife and I left on Friday with a very calm ride over to Catalina, got unpacked and got some shopping in-it was a beautiful day.
That evening it did rain and by Saturday morning the dark clouds cleared to another beautiful day. It was clear, cold , sunny and as the ferry arrived I met more and more friends that came over for the cleanup. I got checked in for Step beach, setup the CIDA banner at a great spot next to the San Joaquin Sport Divers (Thank you Bob) and rounded up some friends to join me. The briefing was at 9:00 and by 9:30 my buddy James and I were off to look for some cool trash. We found a few things of interest, but nothing to win a prize for. Later there was the raffle of which I won nothing and caught very little chum. It was still fun seeing everyone have a good time for a good cause.
Once the raffle was over, town started thinning out from some of the divers leaving back to the mainland. This year there was about 415 divers signed up and because of the weather there were only about 215 at the cleanup. At least it didn’t snow or rain at Catlaina the day of the event. It did start clouding up and it rained again on Saturday night clearing to another cold but beautiful day on Catalina on Sunday. We again went shopping and visited some friends and then it was back to the mainland with another calm crossing later in the day. It turned out to be an excellent weekend for the cleanup and my wife and I to celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary.
