Farnsworth-Truth-Jan. 4, 2015
By Ken Kollwitz
With the holidays over I and several others were very much looking forward to this trip. For the advanced SoCal diver you should know that this time of year can be some of the best and the reports have been very good and I can tell you the reports lived up to their full potential.
The trip was aboard the Truth which had just moved south from Santa Barbara to Rainbow harbor where it will call home till mid-June and at that time it will move back to Santa Barbara. CIDA has lots of trips on it both out of Long Beach and Santa Barbara so please come and join us for some of them.
We arrived and boarded on Saturday night going to dinner with friends that where on the trip. Rainbow Harbor is very nice with lots of choices for places to eat and walk to work off the food you just ate. We departed at 4:00 am on Sunday with perfect conditions. The seas were so flat it felt as though we never left the harbor and of course the ride out was one of the best.
The diving was just as good and with no wind and excellent visibility along with water temp around 60 degrees it was a day you just couldn’t get enough of. Our 1st and 2nd dives were at Farnsworth with little to no current on the 1st dive and you could see the top of the high spots at about 55′ when we jumped in so you can guess navigating was no issue. Still lots of bait fish in the water column and around the top with sightings of morays, a bat ray, a torpedo ray and a very friendly seal. On our 2nd dive the current did pick up but it was still as fun and the 1st dive.
We then moved to Cape Cortez which was a fun dive but as one friend said “It isn’t Farnsworth”. We ran out of time for the 4th dive and with another calm ride we were back to the dock about 7:00 pm. All in all it was an EXCELLENT day and with boat full of fun people!
