Big Sur-Vision-June 23-25, 2017
Big Sur dive report for Channel Islands Dive Adventures. Trip was on the Vision on June 23-25, 2017 and was a blast as always.
What a busy month June was and it didn’t help by going out for 3 days diving along the Big Sur coast aboard the Vision but then someone has to do it! For those that don’t know-Truth Aquatics moves the Vision from Santa Barbara, CA up to Morro Bay for about 3 weeks every June to run 1, 2, 3 & 4 day trips along the north coast and this year because of all the slides on Hwy 1 making a lot of the road impassable we had the coast to ourselves. Hwy 1 was empty of all the cars and travelers that we would normally see but then that isn’t helping the residents and business that rely on travelers passing through.
We boarded Thursday, left at 3 am Friday and were back about 5:30 Sunday. We saw quite a few whales, some otters and a small mola mola along the way. CIDA had a full half charter with 17 and Truth Aquatics only had 2 so it was like a VERY limited-limited load trip. We had excellent topside weather, calm seas and sometimes it was smooth like a lake with very little wind which is a first for me to see. We also had some fog but overall it was nice out with nice topside temperatures.
Underwater was a different story because of a plankton bloom the week before so for some of the dives it was dark like a night dive when you got below the dirty green layer but then we still only had 10′-20′ of visibility. I think I have come to the conclusion after 3 trips that you need some wind and swell because that is when you get cleaner water.
We did four dives Friday & Saturday and two on Sunday with the last at one of my favorites-Jade Cove. The surge wasn’t bad on most dives and actually apart from the dirty green water the diving was pretty darned good. Lots of macro this trip!
We had a fun group of people from all over. The crew and Captain Ian were great and did an outstanding job and they even speared some nice big vermilion which they cooked for dinner one night. CIDA will be doing this same trip in 2018 so add it to your calendar.
