2 Day Photo workshop-Conception-April 30 & May 1, 2016
Gull Island photo trip report for Channel Islands Dive Adventures. Trip was on the Conception on April 30-May 1, 2016 and turned out great.
This was our second photo workshop aboard the Conception with Michael Zeigler and Todd Winner who did an EXCELLENT job as always. I think it is safe to say that everyone learned something new, most won something and it looked like everyone had a good time. I learn something ALL the time and will put my new skills to the test on the CIDA trip to Socorro in June of this year.
The weather wasn’t so much on our side nor were the conditions below water but we did the best we could with what we were given. We started at Gull Island having the best visibility of just about any spot we visited all weekend and that was only about 25’. Water was a chilly 52 and it was green. Most of the sites later Saturday and Sunday were VERY green with visibility no more than 10’. With the surge it made picture taking very challenging which in a way helped me considerably because I was trying to learn more on how to shoot better pictures and get better results with my wide angle lens. One thing for sure is you just never know how the weather will be. Two weeks ago CIDA had a 2 day trip on the Truth and I think the marine forecast was even worse then what we had but the diving and topside conditions turned out to be so much better. You just never know what to expect.
We did have a lower turnout then the previous year but one thing for sure is we had lots of room which I know everyone really enjoyed. Like always we had a fun diverse group of divers and we had another special sighting of nature at work.
Don’t know if you are aware of it but there are bald eagles on Santa Cruz Island. They hang out in pairs and usually have their own territory but on Sunday between Platts Harbor & Pelican Bay we seen 4 eagles sitting together in pairs in the trees. One pair was higher up the side of the mountain and the other was lower closer to the edge of the cliff. There were quite a few seagulls not far out flying around and hanging out in the water and it looked like one of those seagulls pissed the one pair off that were sitting close to the edge because the eagle pair flew down and started dive bombing one seagull in particular. This went on for a few minutes and it looked like they were just trying to send that seagull a signal and then the eagles went back to a spot right on the edge of the cliff. Shortly after both pairs of eagles flew after the
seagulls giving them a chase for their life. Of course the seagulls high tailed it out of there but one just kept getting chased and it finally made it after the eagles probably decided they taste fatty and if they come back whatever happens to them will be their own fault. Jerry the captain of the Conception said that with all the time he has been out at the islands that was the first time he ever witnessed something like what we had seen. Very cool ending to another good weekend out on the water!
