We LOVE Jade Cove and Plaskett Creek campground and can never get enough of it

This is one of our favorite trips throughout the year.

Nothing better than some adventure camping, diving, and hunting for jade.

Trip Highlights

We will be camping at Plaskett Creek across from Sand Dollar Beach and Jade Cove located 15 minutes from Gorda. This is one of the most beautiful areas along the Big Sur coast and one of the few places you can find Jade. The campground is beautiful and walking along the bluffs is very enjoyable. You can mountain bike around the area as well or do some hiking on the many trails nearby.

What is the Plan?

Looking for Jade! The trail down to Jade Cove has been severely impacted over the years and now requires much more work to get down with Scuba equipment but going with snorkel equipment or just a wetsuit to look in the surf zone is doable.  There is also plenty of beachcombing at Sand Dollar Beach and hiking in the area for those not wanting to go down to Jade Cove.

The Camping

All campsites are by reservation only 6 months in advance at a cost of $35.00 per night. The campground fills fast so reserve your site as early as possible!  You are allowed up to 6-8 people and 2 vehicles on each site and you can reserve online at www.recreation.gov. Ken will be in site #42 and a couple of days before we will be in site #86 at Morro Bay State Park Campground if anyone would like to join us.

The campground is very nice with lots of shade, grass, flush toilets, and running water. There are NO showers. The nearest services are in Gorda about 15 minutes south of the campground. There you will find a little general store with gas, ice, and food.

Jade Cove

Jade Cove, is about ¼ mile South of the campsite. The access to the cove from the highway is an easy walk down the dirt path from the highway to the bluffs. Once at the bluffs is where things change. There is a dirt trail leading down to Jade Cove that zig-zags down and has several areas where the trail has washed away making the use of ropes necessary. If you do not want to dive bring some snorkeling gear or just sift through the rocks onshore. Even beach-combing here can produce some nice pieces of Jade and at any rate, it is just a beautiful place to be.
