3 Day California Gold Memorial Weekend-Conception-May 28 to 30, 2016

San Miguel/Santa Rosa Islands report for Channel Islands Dive Adventures. Trip was on the Truth on May 28-30, 2016 and it turned out to be a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

On the Memorial weekend of May 28th to 30th we had a great time out diving on the Conception on our California Gold trip. What is California Gold to us? Just a trip were we try our best to get to the best sites the weather offers us and we did. Of course if the weather was REALLY on our side we would have dived a lot on the outer pinnacles off Miguel but that wasn’t in the cards so we did do the front side (north) of Miguel on Saturday and the backside (south) of Miguel on Sunday and the front side west end of Cruz on Monday.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe weather was much better than the marine forecast predicted and topside was a bit overcast till later in the day but at least the boat ride out and back was rather smooth which is always NICE. The water was a bit green everywhere with visibility the first day at about 15′-20′, the second day was about 25′-30′ and the last day at Cruz was about 25′-30′-not bad considering all the islands have been suffering lately with bad visibility and green water.

We had about 20 people on the trip and if you have been on the Conception you will know we had LOTS of room. Captain Jerry and the crew took good care of us making sure we were happy and feed well.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe dive sites visited on Saturday where Little Lovers Cove, Hare Rock and Prince Island and the fun was at night watching the squid under the bright light put out for the night divers. There were also these strange things that looked like some type of fish swimming around which turned out to be Auklets. Auklets are on Prince Island and they not only were swimming under water but flying on to the boat so as soon as the night dive was over it was time to relocate away from Prince island and say good bye to those short fat little birds.

DSCN1623On Sunday we spent the first 2 dives at Wyckoff Ledge which is always an awesome dive. For dive 2 & 3 and the night dive we stayed at The Markers between Wyckoff and Tyler Bight. The area around Wyckoff and Tyler Bight are probably some of my favorite on San Miguel because there are tons of excellent photo opportunities and if you like spear fishing this can also be an excellent place to be.

Early Monday we moved to west Santa Cruz diving Tiny’s (or Tinies), Godzilla and The Blimp Hanger with a stop at Painted Cave before heading home. All in all it was an excellent weekend.

If anyone would like to join CIDA on another trip please check our schedule, we have PLENTY to choose from.
