5th Annual CIDA Bug Fest-Oct. 10-11, 2014

Santa Barbara Island Lobster trip dive report for Channel Islands Dive Adventures. Trip was on the Pacific Star on Oct. 10 & 11, 2014 and it turned out OK. I was really looking forward to this year’s Bug Fest because of all the excellent diving conditions we had been having the entire year and the conditions on this trip were no disappointment but the bug catching sure was.

santa barbara island mapWe spent both Saturday and Sunday diving Santa Barbara Island and even did 2 night dives on Saturday but it seemed no matter where we went most all of the bugs must have been on vacation. Usually SBI is really good but it could be that because of all the warm water and awesome diving conditions we had been having maybe it confused the little buggers. We did see and catch some so it wasn’t totally a bust and the ones that people did catch were large ones and most seems to be over 7-8 lbs. Now I personally didn’t catch any that big and if I did I will let the large ones go but it is hard to get others to do that when you see that frenzied look on their face when they have bug fever.

santa barbara island lobsterOver the whole trip with all the swimming I did (and it was a lot) I only seen 5 bugs the entire time and came home with 3 and the largest was 3 lbs. That sure isn’t the norm for a 2 day trip but you just have to be able to go with the flow and still have a good time which I did. It was a full boat of fun people like always and the last trip for CIDA on the Pacific Star.

PV mapNext year’s CIDA 6th Annual Bug Fest will be a mini style one with 2 single days of diving the Palos Verdes area aboard the Asante out of Ports of Call, San Pedro. Personally I think the coast will be much better than diving the islands because the area from Palos Verdes to Santa Monica is off limits to trapping so please come and join us for our 6th Annual Bug Fest.
