Santa Rosa Day Hike-Island Packers-Sept. 29, 2019

santa-rosa-islandIf you never been hiking on any of the Channel Islands this is a trip not to miss! Ken and his wife Tessie have done this trip 3 times now with their dive club and it is always SO MUCH fun. Santa Rosa Island is BIG with plenty to see and do if you are an outdoors person. Lots of great hiking and natural beauty plus the sights of the old ranch house make you think of a time long ago.

santa-rosa-islandJoin Island Packers and Channel Islands Dive Adventures for this fun filled day on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019. The plan is to meet around 7:00 am at the Island Packers building in Ventura Harbor next to the Peace dive boat. Take care of paperwork and leave at 8:00 am. Usually they stop at Scorpions to drop off passengers and then circumnavigate the island by traveling along the back side of santa-rosa-islandSanta Cruz island. The trip to the pier at Bechers Bay at Santa Rosa Island takes about 2.15 hours. Once on Santa Rosa you get about 4-4.5 hours of free time to hike and explore. The beach is a must to check out! The boat departs the island at 3:00 pm getting in about 5:30 pm.

During the crossing  there is a good chance to see dolphins.  Blue and Humpback whales  may be spotted during the summer months.  One of the worlds largest sea caves, Painted Cave, is near the return route to Ventura.  If the weather permits the boat will stop there briefly for viewing.

santa-rosa-islandAt 84 square miles, Santa Rosa is the second largest of the eight Channel Islands.  There are two relatively high mountains on the island; Black Mountain and Soledad Peak, however, most of the island is covered by rolling hills.  Steep and dramatic canyons, such as Lobo or Water Canyon, cut through the hills and open up to beautiful white sand santa-rosa-islandbeaches. Many miles of trails and roads are available for hiking exploration. If you can hike fast the Torrey Pines can be an excellent long hike and if not there are several others that are just as nice.

santa-rosa-islandCIDA has friends that are naturalists and we will try to coordinate with them so they can join us and be guides for some hikes. Bring good sturdy hiking boots or shoes, hats, sunscreen and lunch. Small ice chests are allowed and the boat stays at the island while there but they are not at the dock. If you leave anything on the boat it will be safe but you will not have access to it once on the island.

The Island Packers boat does sell food, drinks, snacks, popcorn and they have COLD beer for the return ride home.
