Santa Rosa Island is beautiful, large, and a picturesque place to take a day trip. Santa Rosa is the second largest of the eight Channel Islands with two high mountains and lots of rolling hills. There are a number of hiking trails leading into the interior with beautiful views or you can make your way down to the beautiful white sand beaches. CIDA has friends that are naturalists and they will join us as guides for some hikes. Bring good sturdy hiking boots or shoes, hats, sunscreen and lunch. Small ice chests are allowed and the boat stays at the island while we are on the island.
Usually Island Packers will stop at Scorpions to drop off passengers and then circumnavigate the island by traveling along the back side of Santa Cruz Island. The trip to the pier at Becher’s Bay at Santa Rosa Island is just under 2.5 hours. Once on Santa Rosa you get about 4-4.5 hours of free time to hike and explore. The beach is a must to check out! The boat departs the island at 3:00 pm getting in about 5:30 pm. During the crossing there is a good chance to see dolphins and possible whales.
Island Packers uses twin hulled catamarans built in New Zealand that are fast, smooth riding and comfortable . They are very comfortable with seating indoors and out. The lower deck has 2 heads and a small galley where you can find cold drinks including beer and some fun food choices. The upper deck is mostly covered and is a great place to sit for the beautiful views you will see on the trip. If you need anything the crew are all very helpful and the captain narrates important facts and fun stories along the way.
