The resort’s stunning location directly in front of Arthurs Rock an MPA (Marine Protected Park) gives them one of the best locations to dive in the region.

The Itinerary

Arrive at either of the Manila airports (International (MNL) or Domestic), depending on your schedule and where you are coming from on the morning of May 30, 2024, where you will be greeted by staff from the Crystal Blue resort. The land transfer takes about 3 hours in a large air-conditioned van good for 4-5 well-equipped photographers with dive gear and is about a 3-hour ride to the resort. The group transfers will be coordinated with Ken from CIDA and arranged with the Crystal Blue staff according to the arrival times of each guest. Once at the resort you can relax and get situated for the upcoming blackwater dive adventure.

On June 7, 2024, it will be time to say goodbye to all your new & old friends and depart the resort by van back to the airport unless you are staying for the Blackwater photo workshop that starts the following day. Your departure time will depend on your flight to wherever it is you will be going.

The Diving

Blackwater diving is one of the most unique ways to explore our oceans. The dives are conducted at night and away from shore while using a specially designed lighted downline that drifts with the incoming tide. The bright downline lights are used to attract plankton and to give the divers a strong reference point while conducting the dives, allowing the divers to relax and enjoy this special experience. As the sun sets each night, the largest migration of animals on the planet begins, just offshore, in the form of plankton. These tiny creatures rise from the depths, disperse, and feed. Following the plankton are the things that feed on them. Squid, Octopus, Paper Nautilus, and fish larvae are all target photo subjects on these late-night blackwater dive excursions.

For day dives, Anilao is a Marine Protected Sanctuary and is the best spot in the Philippines for underwater macro photography.  At Crystal Blue, there are world-class dive sites within minutes from the resort house reef. Anilao isn’t only about macro photography and muck diving. It also has thriving reefs that are mostly shallow reefs allowing longer bottom time to get those great photos.

All dives are from duel outrigger-style Banca boats with a maximum of four divers to one guide per boat. With the valet-style diving, they offer and no crowds on the boats, it just can’t get any easier. October to May/June is the dry season and is regarded as the best dive season in Anilao with water temperature around 80-83F, topside temperature around 75-85F, and good vis.

The Accommodations

Crystal Blue has several room types. All are spacious and fully air-conditioned with queen size beds and have either a garden or ocean view. For meals, Crystal Blue has its own open-air restaurant named Gils Place which provides quality without formality or you can have room service between 7:00 am – 9:00 pm every day.
