Dive Accident and Travel Insurance

Dive Accident and Travel Insurance Information

If you’re a diver and don’t have Dive Accident Insurance, don’t kid yourself thinking nothing is ever going to happen. The one time something does happen (and hopefully it never will) will be when you are going to really hope you have dive accident insurance and that also goes for travel insurance especially if you do multiple dive trips in a year!

Why do I need insurance?

  • I am a safe diver
  • I don’t dive often
  • I only do a warm water trip a year
  • I have medical insurance

Do I really need dive accident insurance? I have primary medical coverage

Your primary medical insurance may exclude scuba diving as a hazardous recreational activity. If it covers scuba diving, it may pay only a minimal amount for chamber treatment. Many policies may not cover you when you are out of your region or out of the country. Both the Divers Alert Network (DAN) and Diveassure Dive Accident Insurance Plans are recognized worldwide and can be confirmed easily by a phone call 24 hours a day or click on the banners for more details.

The DAN levels of insurance are secondary coverage and pay up to 100 percent of reasonable and customary costs of all remaining eligible expenses after any other coverage you may have. DAN offers three different dive accident insurance plans to cover medical costs related to a diving accident; there are no mileage restrictions when you use your dive accident or injury coverage. These plans will cover you if you are diving locally or internationally. Dive accident insurance provides coverage for the medical costs of diving accidents and is different from the DAN TravelAssist evacuation assistance member benefit.

DAN also has 3 levels of trip insurance to pick from (per trip, annual or group) and all include trip cancellation & interruption, baggage delay, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and 24/7 travel assistance.

All Diveassure programs are primary. Only Diveassure travel programs offer PRIMARY dive travel and other travel insurance benefits. “Primary insurance” means that your insurer will pay directly to service providers (i.e. air ambulance, hospital, recompression chamber, etc.), or reimburse you in full for your payments made by you, disregard any other insurance you may have, which may or may not cover the incident. With a policy that is not primary processing your claim may take a long time and you may be required to finance evacuation/medical bills, which can run tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, a diving related claim can have an effect on your personal health insurance record.

Some things to consider when buying Dan insurance-

  • Dan is a secondary insurance
  • Claims for travel insurance are based on the amount and not per occurrence even if you have a multi-trip plan
  • Travel insurance covers you any place you travel too
  • No discounts when buying a package with dive accident and travel insurance

Some things to consider when buying DiveAssure insurance-

  • DiveAssure is a primary insurance
  • Claims for travel insurance are per occurrence even if you have a multi-trip plan
  • Travel insurance only covers you outside the US
  • Discounts when buying a package with dive accident and travel insurance

Plan Choices:

No matter how many dives you do or how many trips you do in a year, there are plenty of choices from either DAN or Diveassure. Both DAN and Diveassure have 3 levels of dive accident insurance and some excellent choices for travel insurance to pick from so you do have lots of choices depending on your needs.

Non-divers:

Sometimes we travel with our non-diver partners and that’s not a problem because both DAN and Diveassure have coverage for them. The basic plans still cover medical emergencies for the non-divers and the travel plans are good for anyone whether your a diver or not.

Emergency and non-Emergency Inquires

Both DAN and Diveassure have emergency hotlines for members to call 24 hours a day and non-emergency hotlines that you can call during business hours. You would be surprised how many people forget about this benefit when its not an emergency. If you have something going on and it could be (even remotely) dive related then DAN or Diveassure are just a phone call away.
