Oil Rigs-Magician-Mar. 24, 2018

Oil Rig dive report for Channel Islands Dive Adventures. Trip was on the Magician on Mar. 24, 2018 and it turned out good. The weather the week before leading up to the trip wasn’t the best and the report for Saturday was 15-20 knot winds and upwards to 25 in the afternoon along with a nice size swell at 8 seconds apart but it looked doable plus you NEVER KNOW TILL YOU GO!

I sent an email out to everyone the day before letting them know it was a go and take whatever you need to because it would probably be a bumpy ride plus the Magician is a bit narrow and that wouldn’t help.

I went down the morning of the trip because at O Dark 30 the roads are empty and it only takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes from Oxnard opposed to 1.5 to 2.5 hours plus the parking lot at the 22nd Street Landing is empty making unloading a breeze.

Talked to Captain Carl once I arrived and guess what? The weather report was for a small swell, 16 seconds apart and little wind and adding MUCH MORE VALUE to the saying “You don’t know till you go”.

Of course the vis wasn’t the best, maybe 20′-25′ ft till you got down to about 65′ where it opened up. There was some surge and a little current but nothing like we expected. Sun was out and it was a beautiful day topside and we got 3 good dives in at Elly, Ellen and Eureka.

We had plenty of room, the meals were great and as always the crew took good care of us. If you missed the trip and are looking for another please take a look at the CIDA boat diving schedule. We have plenty for everyone throughout the year!
